San Diego Federal Courthouse

"The two-acre San Diego Federal Courthouse site is developed as a series of inviting plazas and pedestrian pathways along Broadway - San Diego’s main street - sensitively integrating this important civic place with the downtown fabric in a manner that belies the security measures inherent with such a facility.

Spurlock collaborated with artist Robert Irwin and architect Michael Palladino to produce the site conditioned work for the GSA Art + Architecture program - along with site planning, urban design, and landscape architectural design to create a rich network of well-integrated plazas, paths and gardens. The site was arranged to respect established view corridors and integrate with the downtown pedestrian circulation routes - all with attention to plants and materials of the San Diego environment. A key expression of this is the central plaza, which features seating and gathering space among groves of California Sycamores.
